Character Building

Some general notes on building 4th Edition characters.

Classes

There are 4 basic types of Class within 4th Edition:

TypeDescriptionExamples
StrikerRemoves specific targets from the combat by various means.Ranger, Rogue, Sorceror, Warlock
DefenderMeatshield or equivalent. Keeps the enemies busy.Figher, Paladin, Sword Mage
LeaderProvides buffs and healing. Abilities to allow allies to move and attackWarlord, Cleric, Bard
ControllerGenerally has area of effect abilitiesWizard, Invoker, Druid

Abilities

Classes have 1 or more primary abilities. Attacks are typically based off of this ability. Classes usually have one or more secondary abilities too. These control secondary effects. For example a rogue has the ability to strike for damage from primary and also push his opponent a number of squares based on the secondary ability.

Specialisation is likely to be best as a general rule of thumb. Thus pick only one primary ability and one secondary. Your primary ability should be at least 16 and probably 18.
